Annatto or achiote is a fruit of Urucuzeiro, a small tree of the bixáceas family, which can reach up to 6 feet tall and is native to tropical America.
Achiote contains the pigment bixin that acts as a sunscreen on the skin for ultra-violet rays. The Achiote seed is composed of bixicarotenoides that accelerate liver function by reducing cholesterol levels and triglycerides, containing amounts of beta-carotene vitamin A derivative, which when used in proper diets, strengthens the skin against the sun's rays, providing a natural tan and healthy skin.
